Short answer: Wafer diameter is necessary but not sufficient. A usable calibration wafer must match the inspection tool, handling hardware, substrate and orientation requirements, deposition area, edge exclusion and recipe assumptions.

Decision rule: Quote the wafer as a tool-specific reference configuration, not as a bare diameter.

Confirm the inspection platform

Provide the exact manufacturer and model of the surface-inspection system. Different generations can support different wafer sizes, carriers, notches, flats, scan recipes and sensitivity ranges. A 200 mm wafer that physically loads may still be wrong for the method.

Define substrate and surface

Specify silicon or another required substrate, surface finish, orientation and any resistivity or oxide condition that matters to the inspection response. If the procedure uses a particular background surface, do not substitute without approval.

Account for notch, flat and orientation

Orientation features control handling and recipe alignment. Spot-deposition maps depend on consistent orientation. Include notch or flat requirements, front/back identification and carrier orientation in the order.

Define usable deposition area

Edge exclusion, handling zones and tool scan limits affect where particles should be deposited. A nominal full deposition should still be defined against the usable scan area and background requirements.

Plan packaging and transport

Larger wafers can be more sensitive to handling and carrier compatibility. Specify single-wafer or multi-wafer packaging, clean carrier requirements, shipping orientation and any returnable or reusable container needs.

Wafer diameter is only the first compatibility check

The standard must fit the tool’s mechanical handling and recipe assumptions. Confirm notch or flat orientation, thickness range, substrate material, edge exclusion, backside condition, carrier requirements and whether the inspection recipe expects a particular deposition map.

Do not use an adapter or alternate diameter without assessing how it changes handling, focus, mapping and coordinate registration. Where a platform supports multiple wafer sizes, define whether the objective is cross-platform comparison or independent calibration of each handling path.
