Scientific equipment and cleanroom technical glossary

Use these definitions to align engineering, quality, laboratory and procurement teams. A glossary definition is a starting point; the governing standard, regulation, manufacturer specification and approved site procedure control the actual requirement.

Use discipline: Do not convert a general definition into a purchase specification without identifying the application, acceptance criteria, operating state and required evidence.

Acceptance criteria
Predefined conditions that determine whether a test, installation, document or delivered configuration is acceptable. Effective criteria are measurable, tied to the requirement and agreed before testing.
Airborne particle counter
An instrument that detects and counts particles suspended in air, commonly using light scattering. Flow rate, size channels, calibration basis, sampling method and intended use must match the application.
Airflow visualization
The use of visible tracer media and recorded observation to study airflow direction, interaction, turbulence, recovery, obstructions and movement around critical operations.
As-built
A cleanroom occupancy state in which the installation is complete, services are connected and functioning, but production equipment, materials and personnel are absent unless otherwise defined.
At-rest
A defined cleanroom occupancy state in which equipment is installed and operating as agreed, but operating personnel are absent. The exact state must be specified.
Calibration
An operation that relates instrument indications or assigned values to reference values under specified conditions. Calibration does not automatically mean adjustment, repair or conformance.
Calibration wafer standard
A wafer carrying controlled particles, features or contamination used to evaluate, calibrate or monitor semiconductor inspection and measurement systems.
Certificate of analysis (CoA)
A lot- or item-specific document reporting tested properties, assigned values or analytical results against stated specifications.
Certificate of conformance (CoC)
A declaration that supplied goods conform to identified requirements, specifications or a purchase order. It may not contain detailed measurement results.
Cleanroom classification
Assignment of an air-cleanliness class based on airborne particle concentration under a defined standard, particle-size range, sampling plan and occupancy state.
Cleanroom qualification
Documented testing that demonstrates a cleanroom or controlled environment meets approved requirements. It can include classification, airflow, pressure, recovery, filter integrity and other tests.
Contamination control strategy
A planned, documented system of controls for facility, equipment, personnel, materials, utilities, monitoring and process risks that collectively protect product or process quality.
Continuous monitoring
Automated or frequent collection of selected environmental parameters over time. It is not synonymous with classification and must be designed around risk, locations, alarms and response procedures.
Critical zone
An area where exposed product, critical surfaces or processes require the highest defined level of contamination control.
Dynamic smoke study
Airflow visualization performed under representative operating conditions, including normal interventions, equipment motion and personnel activity defined by the approved protocol.
Equivalency
A conclusion that an alternate preserves defined requirements. Similar appearance, category or advertised performance is not enough; interfaces, documentation, service, calibration, materials and operating limits may matter.
Factory acceptance test (FAT)
A pre-shipment test performed at the manufacturer or supplier location against agreed scope and criteria. It does not replace site acceptance or qualification unless the approved strategy explicitly says so.
Fog density
The visible concentration of a tracer cloud. More visible fog is not automatically better; excessive density can obscure airflow behavior, create condensation risk or exceed the study need.
Full deposition wafer
A calibration wafer in which a controlled particle population or material is distributed across a substantial portion of the usable wafer surface rather than isolated spots.
HEPA filter integrity test
A test using an aerosol challenge and detection method to identify unacceptable penetration or leaks in a high-efficiency particulate air filter system.
Installation qualification (IQ)
Documented verification that equipment and required components are installed according to approved specifications, including identification, utilities, materials, drawings, software and calibration status where applicable.
Isolator
A physical barrier system designed to separate a controlled process or product from the surrounding environment and personnel, with defined transfer, airflow and decontamination controls.
LN₂ fogger
An airflow-visualization system that uses liquid nitrogen to create a visible tracer cloud. Delivery configuration, ventilation, oxygen-deficiency risk and operating procedure require application-specific review.
Metrological traceability
A property of a measurement result whereby it can be related to a reference through a documented, unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing to measurement uncertainty.
Multispot calibration wafer
A wafer with multiple localized particle or feature deposits, often used to evaluate response at selected locations, sizes or concentrations.
NIST traceability
A commonly used phrase indicating a documented measurement relationship to standards associated with the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The exact chain, references and uncertainty must be examined rather than inferred from the phrase alone.
Operational
A cleanroom occupancy state in which the installation is functioning in the specified manner with the defined number of personnel working under agreed conditions.
Operational qualification (OQ)
Documented verification that equipment functions across approved operating ranges and modes according to predefined criteria.
Particle size standard
A material with particles having characterized size properties, used to calibrate, verify or evaluate particle-measurement and inspection systems.
PSL
Polystyrene latex, a material widely used for highly uniform spherical particle standards. Compatibility, size assignment, concentration, suspension medium and intended measurement method remain important.
RABS
A restricted access barrier system that limits direct operator access to a critical processing zone while using defined barriers, airflow and intervention controls.
Readiness score
A GSE measure of RFQ information completeness. It indicates whether enough technical and commercial information has been supplied for review; it does not confirm product suitability or availability.
Recertification
A documented reevaluation of a standard or item against defined criteria. The scope can differ from new manufacture and should identify what was inspected, measured, renewed or reissued.
Remote particle counter
A fixed or distributed particle-counting sensor intended for integration into a monitoring system, commonly involving tubing, communications, software, alarms and location-specific sampling design.
Site acceptance test (SAT)
A test after delivery and installation that confirms agreed configuration, condition, utilities, interfaces and functions in the user environment.
Smoke study
A commonly used term for airflow visualization. The tracer may not be combustion smoke; the approved method should identify the media, equipment, conditions and recording requirements.
Source review date
The date on which GSE last checked the official or primary source supporting a time-sensitive technical claim. It is not a guarantee that the source will remain unchanged.
Static pressure
Pressure available to overcome resistance in a flow path. For fog delivery, static-pressure capability can matter more than free-air flow when hoses, enclosures, filters or positive pressure create resistance.
Technical RFQ
A request for quotation that defines application, configuration, acceptance, documentation, quantity, destination and schedule requirements rather than requesting price alone.
Uncertainty
A quantified parameter describing the dispersion of values that could reasonably be attributed to a measured or assigned quantity. It is necessary for interpreting calibration and comparison results.
Ultrasonic fogger
A system that uses ultrasonic transducers to generate droplets from a compatible water source for visible airflow visualization. Water quality, droplet behavior, output, delivery resistance and cleaning procedure affect use.
User requirement specification (URS)
A controlled statement of what the user needs equipment or a system to do, including performance, interfaces, documentation, compliance and lifecycle expectations.
Turn definitions into requirements

A shared vocabulary is useful only when it improves execution

Use the glossary to identify ambiguous terms in a specification. Then replace each ambiguous phrase with measurable conditions: operating state, range, tolerance, evidence, document, interface and responsible party.
