Short answer: a particle-size standard should be specified by the instrument being calibrated, nominal particle diameter, particle material, presentation format, concentration or loading requirements, and documentation needs. “I need PSL beads” is not enough information for a reliable quote.
1. Identify the instrument and measurement method
Start with the equipment that will use the standard. Particle counters, particle-sizing instruments and wafer-inspection systems can all use known particle references, but they do not use them in the same way. The manufacturer and model often determine what concentration, material and presentation format are practical.
2. Define the nominal particle size
Specify the target diameter or set of diameters. If the calibration method spans a range, list each required size rather than asking for a vague “multi-size standard.”
3. Choose PSL or silica
PSL microspheres are a common polymer reference for particle sizing. Silica provides an inorganic alternative. Use the material called for by the instrument method, internal procedure or process objective rather than substituting materials based only on price or availability.
4. Specify how the particles must be presented
A suspension standard is different from a deposited wafer standard. Semiconductor inspection systems may need a known population deposited on a wafer, while another instrument may use a liquid suspension directly. This single distinction changes the product category completely.
5. Define documentation requirements
If the method requires traceability, calibration certification or other documentation, state it on the RFQ. Documentation should be treated as part of the product specification, not as an afterthought after shipment.
RFQ shorthand: “Instrument: [manufacturer/model]. Material: PSL. Nominal size: [x]. Format: suspension/wafer. Wafer: [diameter if applicable]. Documentation: [requirement]. Quantity: [x].”
When you need a wafer standard instead

Add the acceptance event
State what the laboratory will do with the standard when it arrives. Will it verify a particle counter at a defined point, characterize an imaging system, support a surface-inspection check, or establish a response curve? The acceptance event exposes missing requirements.
Commercial fields that prevent rework
Include required quantity, destination, required-on-site date, whether partial shipment is acceptable and whether the quote is budgetary or for immediate purchase. Commercial context should not replace technical detail, but it determines the correct procurement path.
