Particle Standard Uncertainty, Tolerance and Distribution Width

Short answer: Measurement uncertainty, product tolerance and particle-size distribution describe different things. Treating them as interchangeable can lead to a standard that appears acceptable on paper but does not support the intended calibration decision.

Decision rule: Ask what each number represents and how it enters the instrument’s acceptance calculation.

Measurement uncertainty

Uncertainty quantifies doubt associated with a stated measurement result under a defined method. It belongs with the assigned value and confidence statement. It is not the same as the spread of particles in the bottle.

Manufacturing or product tolerance

A tolerance defines an acceptable product range, often around a nominal target. It may be a release specification rather than a measurement uncertainty. A product can be within tolerance while its assigned value differs from the nominal label.

Distribution width

Distribution width describes how particle sizes vary within the population. Metrics may include standard deviation, coefficient of variation or percentile information. Instruments that rely on a narrow response peak may require tighter distribution control.

Build the calibration acceptance model

The laboratory should determine which value is entered into the instrument or method, how uncertainty is considered, what response tolerance is allowed and whether distribution width affects the expected signal. Put those requirements in the specification before requesting a quote.

Review certificates consistently

Create a certificate-review checklist so different lots are evaluated the same way. Record the assigned value, expanded uncertainty, coverage factor where provided, distribution metric, method, date and validity.

Ask how uncertainty is stated, the coverage factor or confidence basis when applicable, and whether distribution width is reported separately. Do not add uncertainty and tolerance mechanically without understanding how the certificate defines each term.
